The Purgatory Bean of Gradoli owes its name to the ancient tradition of the "Pranzo del Purgatorio," of which the bean is the cornerstone. This lunch has been held annually since 1600 in Gradoli, a municipality in the Tuscia Viterbese area, on Ash Wednesday. The religious significance of this event is to pray for divine mercy for the souls in Purgatory.
